Election Day 2005

5 May 2005

It's Election Day in the U.K.

I don't know much about international politics or British political parties, but according to SelectSmart's UK Political Party Selector 2005, I think I'm rooting for the Conservative and BNP parties.

Sorry, Tony!

Here's the Beef!

4 May 2005

The small burgerFYI: That's the small burger!

Denny's Beer Barrel Pub is back on top!

In January, I posed the question "Where's the Beef?" regarding Denny's 11-pound burger. Well, looks like they heard my call and finally put some meat in that tiny burger!

I didn't report on it, but recently the Clinton Station Diner in Clinton, NJ stole the title of "world's biggest burger" for a while with Zeus, a 12.5-pound burger (including a 7-pound patty). Happily, the competition helped Denny's to soar above and beyond, introducing the "Beer Barrel Belly Buster," a 15-pound burger including 10.5 pounds of ground beef. For those who do not excel in mathematics, that means Denny's has reclaimed their crown (or do they pass a belt around, like in professional wrestling?) as the home of the "world's biggest burger."

If you haven't been to katestelnick.com, be sure to drop by and take a look around. For those who have forgotten, Kate Stelnick was the 115-pound college girl that finished off the 11-pound burger. I would guess that it was this publicity that led to the competition.

I think I'll have to go watch the Ziggy Piggy scene from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure now . . .

The ACLU Loves Killing Babies

3 May 2005

ACLUACLU

You might remember an article I wrote in March titled "The U.N. Loves Killing Babies." Well, this is no secret, but the ACLU has yet again proved that they love killing babies.

According to news stories, a 13-year-old girl, who is a ward of the state, became pregnant when she ran away from a state-licensed group home. In Florida, at least, that's statutory rape.

Since the state is her guardian, the guardian would not give permission for an abortion. After all, there's a state statute that says "In no case shall the department consent to sterilization, abortion or termination of life support." It seems fairly straight-forward to me. For some odd reason, however, Florida also has a law that says that minors can elect to have an abortion. Thus, we have conflicting laws, and another court challenge.

I'm not sure if this is an attempt at a public relations save due to the recent Schiavo court challenges, but after a Palm Beach state court ruled that the girl could have an abortion, the state quickly dropped the case.

Jeb Bush made a wonderful statement:

It's a tragedy that a 13-year-old child would be in a vulnerable position where she could be made pregnant and it's a tragedy that her baby will be lost. There's no good news in this at all.

The only issue I have with the statement is that he should have said the baby will be killed, not lost. But it's politics, and that's how it goes.

Keeping to their true colors, the ACLU of Florida said "The pattern is the state's hostility to the exercise of personal freedom."

Remember, the ACLU focuses on only one of "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Also, to summarize, if you're 13 in Florida, you can't say yes to sex, but you can say yes to killing your baby. Interesting. One more reason not to move down to the geriatric state.

Tons o' Fun with Google Maps

2 May 2005

Spaghetti JunctionSpaghetti Junction

Last month, I posted about Google Maps, Google's latest astounding innovation. Of course, we're all tempted to type in our home address and try and spot our house on the satellite images. Better yet, someone at work sent me a link for the Buffalo Bills' Ralph Wilson Stadium. Then, 1754blog.com posted an airplane graveyard.

This got me thinking . . . what else was out there to see on Google Maps? Surely someone had gone to some lengths to find some cool stuff. Sure enough, there are a few sites out there already that are dedicated to fun or interesting Google Map finds.

I really could list a dozen good sites there, but I'll limit my selection to one. My favorite site is Virtual Globetrotting, because it simply blows all the other sites away. That site uses screenshots liberally, which is very helpful.

If looking through Google Maps isn't geeky enough for you, you can start playing Scavengeroogle, a sort of scavenger hunt for a google map. They show you an image from Google Maps and give you one hint, and you try and find the image.

Here are a few of my favorite Google Map finds. There are plenty of other neat listings out there, too, but I'll leave it up to you to find them. Most of these were taken from perljam.net's Google Satellite Maps page. It seems to be the best comprehensive listing out there.

April 2005 Statistics

1 May 2005

April was 53's third full month online. The site's traffic generally remained the same as March, with slight increases in hits and a larger increase in users. If I was blogging just to make money, I guess Numa Numa is the way to go. My Numa Numa Meets American Idol post has risen just 41 hits short of second place. Of course, the standard Numa Numa post continues its reign as top dog.

Last month, I questioned why so many people had viewed the February statistics post, as it actually made the top 10 list for March. I finally figured out the reasoning behind this. I can only imagine that the fact that I include top search results in my statistics would help boost that particular post's rankings, because that's exactly what everyone is posting. It only makes sense.
