Failure Is Not an Option

This week's simpleton is the Professional Association of Teachers.

According to an AP story, the British organization PAT (Professional Association of Teachers) is going to suggest at an upcoming conference that the word "fail" should be replaced with "deferred success." This would, they argue, avoid the demoralization of pupils.

Heck, if you're simply deferring your success, then it really doesn't sound so bad. I would guess you'd see an increase in "deferred successes" in any schools that would adopt this strategy. And boy, will those kids continue to feel good about themselves, too!

I'm all for this idea . . . except I think the phrase should instead be "failure to incur success."
