Bear Safety: Wear a Bell

Wear a bell

While I was reading a document regarding bear safety, I was surprised to find that "Wear a bell" is a suggestion repeated many, many times in various materials and on multiple sites. As I said, it shows up over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

In fact, at the National Park Service/Alaska Public Lands Information Center Bear Safety in Alaska page, you can request a sticker for children that outlines the following bear safety guidelines:

  • BE A NOISY HIKER…
    Sing, talk, wear a bell.
  • GIVE BEARS SPACE…
Watch & photograph from a distance.
  • RESPECT A BEAR's MEAL…
    Stay away from dead animals.
  • KEEP A CLEAN CAMP…
Cook & store food away from your camp.
  • LEAVE YOUR DOG AT HOME…
    Bears and pets don't mix.

Oddly enough, "Run like a bear is chasing you" didn't crack the top five. "Don't play with dead animals," however, was in the top three. Go figure.
