Champion of Breakfasts

What is the Champion of Breakfasts tournament?

As part of my Blogathon 2006 activities, The Smarmy Carny hosted a "Champion of Breakfasts" tournament, where anyone could vote on their favorite cereals. Cereals went head-to-head for 25 minutes, and then another set of cereals went against each other. 32 cereals in all vied for the title of "Champion of Breakfasts."

Voting was conducted in 31 matches and lasted from 9am until 11pm EST. Click the thumbnail below to see the brackets for the Champion of Breakfasts, including results:

Here was the approximate schedule for the Champion of Breakfasts on July 29, 2006:

  • Round of 32 - 9:00 am - 3:40 pm EST - 16 matches at 25 minutes each.
  • Sweet 16 - 3:40 pm - 7:00 pm EST - 8 matches at 25 minutes each.
  • Ate 8 - 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm EST - 4 matches at 30 minutes each.
  • Flavorful 4 - 9:00 pm - 10:00 pm EST - 2 matches at 30 minutes each.
  • Tasty 2 - 10:00 pm - 11:00 pm EST - 1 championship final at 1 hour.

I apologize in advance if your favorite cereal is not represented. There are separate divisions for Kellogg's, General Mills, Post, and a mixed division for Quaker Oats and a few organic brands. Due to this, I could only choose eight cereals from each manufacturer (or bump it up to 64 cereals, which wouldn't work well in a 24 hour format). While a manufacturer might have had 10-12 worthy cereals, I had to make the cut somewhere. First, the best-selling cereals were added, and others were chosen based on popularity and originality. For instance, you'll notice that Post Raisin Bran didn't make the cut because Kellogg's Raisin Bran had already made it into the standings.
