True Story Video

20 August 2008

Billy Reid of Very Tasteful puts out consistently catchy songs on his website. One of his latest tracks, and True Story is no exception.

The video for this song is one of those "photograph" videos. It's missing the "photograph-turned-to-video" element, but still worth watching.

He also released a video of Swim Now, a song based on the Christopher Guest's SNL sketch "Men's Synchronized Swimmers" featuring Martin Short and Harry Shearer.

Blogathon Game: I Hate That Song!

29 July 2007

Over on the official Blogathon site, the current game goes like this: "This game was inspired by the current run of terrible songs on BERadio, played intentionally to make tired bloggers flag with horror. Tell me about your LEAST favorite song. The one that makes you dive for the off switch."

Here's the song I can't stand:

This is the song that never ends.
It will go on and on my friend.

. . . and so on. But this is my version, so it stopped early. :)

Due to a server outage for almost an hour, I was a bit late posting this and the previous post. But you'd never know unless you read this, because you couldn't get to my site to see that I hadn't posted :P But in all fairness to the spirit of Blogathon, I had the posts set and on-time in my HTML editor, Notepad.

Sunday's Site: Idle Idols

14 January 2007

American Idol 6 is premiering on Tuesday, January 16, so naturally this Sunday's Site is Idle Idols, the web's home of the funniest American Idol auditions.

Idle Idols doesn't care about the winners and good singers. Idle Idols cares only about the William Hungs of this world. I know it and you know it: American Idol's entertainment value is derived primarily from the wacky, crazy, and lame auditions and the reactions this gets from the judges.

Idle Idols will attempt to blog each of the entertaining auditions throughout American Idol 6 and future seasons. For a trip down memory lane, you can also read through American Idol 5 audition notes that are posted there now. Rumor has it that previous seasons will also start to appear after the American Idol 6 auditions are over.

One of the highlights of Idle Idols are the Idle Interviews it gets from American Idol contestants. Thus far, it has already posted interviews from American Idol 4 reject and psychodiva Mary Roach as well as American Idol 5 rejects "Crazy Dave" Hoover, screamo boy Ryan Hart, and "Everybody Dance Now" Laurence Soares.

Idle Idols describes itself as such:

Idle Idols celebrates the phenomenon of breathtaking American Idol auditions — and not in the good way. When we say "breathtaking," we're thinking less of "exciting and thrilling" and more along the lines of "astonishing" or "I'm out of breath because I just ran four miles away from that horrid act."

Kelly? Reuben? Clay? Taylor? Never heard of 'em.

This is the world where William Hung is king. Other celebrities include Mary Roach and "Crazy" Dave Hoover. These contestants taught us that quality singing isn't nearly as entertaining as a good show. Bad singers, outrageous outfits, and your everyday, run of the mill psychopaths . . . that's entertainment!

Idle Idols is a sister site of The Smarmy Carny. Enjoy!

"Weird Al" — Don't Download This Song

23 September 2006

"Weird Al" Yankovic's new album, ::amazon("B000H9HWSM", "Straight Outta Lynwood"):: will be released on September 26, 2006.

The 12 tracks include:

  • "White & Nerdy"(See below for video) A parody of Chamillionaire's "Ridin'" ("White & Nerdy" = "Ridin' Dirty")
  • "Canadian Idiot" — A parody of Green Day's "American Idiot"
  • "Confessions Part III" — A parody of Usher's "Confessions, Pt. 2"
  • "Do I Creep You Out" — A parody of Taylor Hicks' American Idol finale song "Do I Make You Proud"
  • "Trapped in the Drive Thru" — A parody of R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" (and just as long)
  • "Don't Download This Song"(See below for video) A "We Are the World"-esque attempt at preventing illegal music downloads
  • "Polkarama!" — No explanation necessary. Includes "Let's Get It Started," "Take Me Out," "Don't Cha," and "Gold Digger."

::amazon("B000H9HWSM", "Straight Outta Lynwood"):: is a DualDisc release. The extra features on the other side will be six animated music videos, karaoke versions of all songs, and a brief documentary.

Get more news and hear some other clips at Weird Als' MySpace page.

Here is the video for "Don't Download This Song." The animation was done by Bill Plympton, perhaps the animators of animators. You can't watch a shorts show without crossing a Plympton animation. (He animated 2005 Academy Award "Best Animated Short Film" nominee "Guard Dog.") Of course, you can also obtain "Don't Download This Song" at dontdownloadthissong.com . . .

In addition to listening to "White & Nerdy" on Weird Als' MySpace page, you can also watch the video. It's not a strict parody of the "Ridin'" video, but if you'd like to compare with the original, check out Chamillionaire's "Ridin'" video.

As an aside, ::amazon("B000H9HWSM", "Straight Outta Lynwood"):: is the first album release since his parents died of carbon monoxide poisoning in April 2004. (This three year span is not different than the spacing between any of his other albums.)

Lists of Bests

13 August 2006

Even though it was just a click away, I finally discovered Lists of Bests, which is part of the 43 Things family. Read more about my 43 Things at Random Fodder.

Lists of Bests allows you to create and find lists of products, places, goals and people. From the Pulitzer Prize to the Oscars and beyond; you can start the list yourself or find existing lists. For example, I have already added myself to several lists, such as:

You can also start your own personal lists like "My Top 10 Favorite Books," "My Films for Computer Geeks," etc. There are three types of lists: award lists (lists of particular award winners), definitive lists (lists from other publications that are set in stone), and personal lists (created and edited only by you).

The most fun part about Lists of Bests is that when you add or create a list to your profile, you can easily check off your progress item by item. Especially useful is that, when I checked all of the Academy Award Best Picture winners that I had seen, those movies were already checked off in the "Roger Ebert's 'The Great Movies'" list when I visited it.

Here are the lists I have completed:

Here are the 5 lists I am still working on, but closest to completing:

What are you waiting for? Go get started today!

Video Vednesday: OK Go - Here It Goes

9 August 2006

Here's a pretty cool video by a band named OK Go. The song is "Here It Goes," and the theme is treadmills.

Keep in mind that the video is by the band and is not a fan movie. At first, I was worried that four guys working in a fitness club or fitness equipment store had way too much time on their hands. As it turns out, it's four guys working in a band that have way too much time on their hands.

The video's online popularity is booming as the YouTube video has been viewed over 1.8M times thus far. It's now on VH1's Top 20 Countdown, too.

Two thoughts going through my mind throughout the video are:

  • Who ever thought about choreographing a treadmill dance?
  • How many injuries and face plants occurred during the practices for this video?

Nonetheless, this music video uses up less money and personal time than most of the videos you see on MTV and VH1.
